With such a good support for AMD GPUs, it's quite easy to get AMD graphics card working on macOS Sierra 10.12.6 and later which requires only few steps. The sleep/wake function also works normally without any restarts or crashes. Also you don't need to use any helper cards or IGPU.
Before macOS Sierra version 10.12.6, it was quite difficult to get any AMD Cards working as it involved several steps to get it working with right framebuffers which was too difficult for any beginner/new users. With this, it had a few restriction and required helper/secondary or IGPU(Intel HD Graphics) for the hardware acceleration.
Now you can run AMD graphics card natively without need of installing any Drivers like NVIDIA and extra configuration. With the release of macOS High Sierra, a wide range of AMD graphics cards has been added and has more better support than macOS Sierra in terms of AMD GPUs.
This method is easy to roll-back and works after update. Before using this guide, we recommend you to perform a clean installation of macOS.
Requirements
- Supported AMD Graphics Card
- Original AMD kexts in S/L/E
- macOS Sierra 10.12.6 or later
BIOS Settings
- The very first step is to setup your BIOS. This guide will only include settings for AMD users.
- To access your BIOS/UEFI, press and hold Delete key on your Keyboard. The key maybe different in your case. Refer to your Motherboard Guide/Manual.
- DisableInternal Graphics
- Set Initial Display Output to PCIe 1 Slot
- Some BIOS/UEFI has no PCIe 1 Slot so set PEG/PCIe.
- If you're using UEFI, supported by your motherboard, you'll need to install macOS as a UEFI Boot Mode. If you're having a BIOS, then install macOS as a Legacy Boot Mode because if you use BIOS and use UEFI Boot Mode, the AMD Graphics Card will not work. You may not even reach to Login screen or resulting in black screen after boot or crashes or panics. It simply won't work.
Mount EFI Partition
- Mount your EFI partition of your system drive.
Verify the Drivers
- To get hardware acceleration, you need EmuVariableUefi-64.efi for NVRAM detection. Without this, the acceleration will not work.
- Navigate to EFI/Clover/drivers64UEFI and verify EmuVariableUefi-64.efi exists in this location.
- If the EmuVariableUefi-64.efi is not there, here's a quick step to add the drivers.
- Mount your EFI Partition of your system drive
- Open config.plist using Clover Configurator
- Navigate to Install Drivers tab in the left pane and under Drivers UEFI 64-Bit and click on EmuVariableUefi-64.efi and it will install the drivers.
- Sometimes the EmuVariableUefi-64.efi maybe too old and you'll need to update it. Just click on EmuVariableUefi-64.efi to uninstall and click on EmuVariableUefi-64.efi again and it will install the latest drivers.
Download the kexts
The next step is to download the required kexts to enable AMD Graphics. WhateverGreen doesn't works alone. WhateverGreen and Lilu is needed together to work with conjunction in order to enable the AMD Graphics and preventing any errors.
Downloads
Notes :
- Download the latest version for better support.
- Download only RELEASE.zip file.
Placing the kexts
- Mount your EFI partition of your system drive
- Copy WhateverGreen.kext and Lilu.kext from RELEASE folder downloaded above.
- Navigate to EFI/Clover/kexts/Other and place the both the kexts to this location.
- If the kext is already present in the directory, replace them with a new version
- Do not use WhateverGreen.kext.dSYM, WhateverName.app and Lilu.kext.dSYM
Restarting your System
After performing all the above steps, restart your system in order to enable the AMD Graphics Card.
Verify your Card
Look for the information of your card under About this Mac and verify the VRAM. For more information of your Card, navigate to System Information and navigate to Graphics/Displays Tab.
Notes :
- If you get a black screen, make sure to update your BIOS and switch from Legacy to UEFI boot mode.
- If your BIOS has CSM option, disable it.
- If your BIOS has PCI ROM Priority, set it to UEFI/UEFI ROM.
- If your BIOS has Legacy Option ROMs, set it to UEFI/UEFI Only.
Sample Attachment
The AMD RX580 from Sapphire and ASUS are used as the example in this guide.
